SPOT CHECK - IT'S STILL SUMMER IN THE FAR NORTH

We've said it once and we'll keep saying it again: we're truly blessed in New Zealand. In much of the world, the harsh onshore winter winds would have you huddled by the fireplace for half the year, even in the thickest of merino wools. But not here.

Our country is long and narrow! With two coasts, especially at the northern tip, we have twice the options within a short drive. Add in some rocky point setups that await huge winter swells, and there's no reason to stay cooped up inside on a stormy winter day. With the biggest swells of the year predicted and perfect wind conditions, this adventure was too good to pass up. Our accommodations were already secured with a rooftop tent, giving us more space to pack our essentials. We loaded our boards, beanies, food, and friends into the truck and started the hike. It was a hike, but it was also a beautiful journey!
As often happens during a storm, the wind died down and the skies cleared. This created a weekend we won't soon forget. Lunch was eaten outside picnic-style and in between surfs we relaxed in t-shirts making peanut butter and banana jaffles. It's hard to believe it's winter. Days like this seem rare in the middle of a New Zealand winter.

At the far north end, we found an incredible spot to park our truck and pitch our rooftop tent. After a few stops, we settled into the dunes and spent the rest of the weekend eating, sleeping, and enjoying the longest, most foot-burning left of our lives (try saying that three times fast). Again, we were truly blessed—the very definition of "happy campers."

There's really no reason to stay indoors this winter. Get outside and expand your adventures. A campfire will keep you warm!
